Fido’s Fat Farm

The suggestion has been made that I rename my business from simply ‘Love dogs’ to ‘Love dogs health spa and retreat’.  I personally favour ‘Fido’s Fat Farm’.  The reason?

Roxy, the Beth Ditto of blue roan Cocker spaniels came to stay for a week … and without any change to her diet lost 2 whole kilos.  Around Tuesday I could see the beginnings of a waist as well as a ...

The ‘Stubbler’

I’ve been emulating Burt Lancaster of late.

No, I haven’t won an Oscar for an evangelistic drama.  Neither have I been cavorting in the surf with Deborah Kerr nor have I joined a circus (well, not since I tried when I was 7).

I’ve been following in his – wet – footsteps in The Swimmer but with stubble fields instead of swimming pools.
In this movie Burt ...

It’s all ‘grist to the mill’

Being a writer means that everything is “grist to the mill”.  Even this website.

I was asked yesterday to write a short article for The Perth Hub on my experiences of setting up and administering a WordPress website.  It could have been shorter than even the 300 words allotted to me – “If I can do it, anyone can”.

However, I agreed to elaborate and it follows.  If ...

Free (but expensive) Zhebs

Eighteen degrees at the house but by the time I got to the car park at Sheoch Burn for a long dog walk it was thirteen degrees and drizzling.  We’re only talking a ten minute journey but it felt like I had crossed to a different continent.  What was it I said in a previous blog about there being no such thing as bad weather jut inappropriate clothing?  High time I heeded my own advice.  ...

Every empty dog bed has a furry lining

First, the bad news.  It was only a matter of time until the downside of ‘Love dogs’ made itself apparent to me.  My friends did warn me about this particular aspect but I guffawed in their faces.  Alas, they know me all too well.

It was the end of their holiday for Dana the lurcher and Bronach the border terrier and  I volunteered to walk my weekend wards the couple of miles ...

That great dog novel: Wuthering Heights

The New Oxford Dictionary of English definition:  contentment  (noun)  a state of happiness and satisfaction.

My definition:  contentment  (favourite noun)  rainy night in September, roaring fire, four dogs at my feet, two on my knee and a good book.

Or in other words, 17th September,  2011 from around 8 p.m.

Due to an overlap I had three sleepover guests ...

Dogs = Happiness. It’s confirmed

Passionate about so many things, I am frequently sent cuttings, reviews and miscellaneous “stuff” pertaining to them from my friends. Dogs (quelle surprise) feature high on my pash-list. My lovely friends and fellow scribes, Ann and Peter, who escaped the rat race a few years ago and decamped to the Isle of Lewis, are regular nurturers of my variety of appetites. The review of the book ...

Formalities over

One of the nicest aspects of ‘Love dogs’ is meeting a new canine client for the first time.  Yesterday was no exception.

A new human client brought her utterly adorable spaniel collie cross, Ross, out to meet me.   Her holiday plans aren’t until October but I wanted to keep him yesterday.  Big, black, floppy, hairy bundle of fun.  And he has spats!   Too cute.

They ...

One woman and her three dogs

For all of you who were still duvet-wrapped at 6  a.m. and woke to a grey, drizzly outlook this morning can I just point out that it was actually not so bad at that time?  I was clumping around the countryside at that time with my three dogs (no sleepovers last night), Scarlett, my orange roan Cocker spaniel, Dinah, my Golden Retriever and Finty, my red and white collie.

Weather ...

How much do I love thee …

If this isn’t a testament to my absolute love of and devotion to dogs I don’t know what is.
Out on my early morning run today with Finty, my red and white collie and running buddy, we spotted a neighbour with his lovely German Shepherd, Josie lumbering up the track toward us.  Finty loves Josie.  As we thundered along to meet them I greeted Alec with a breathless “Good morning” ...
